What data did you lose by unmerging cells? It doesn't work that way. The
data in a merged cell will be retained in the top left cell of the unmerged
cells that had been merged.

Getting rid of merged cells causes you to lose data. I am using a
template
and didn't merge any cells. didn't even know there were any merged cells
until I had entered ALL the data and tried to sort.

It doesn't mean height and width of the cells, it means number of rows
and
columns of cells in a merged cell. I'll be the third to say, get rid of
the
merged cells. They cause more problems than this.

I have a doc that contains both merged and unmerged cells and need to be
able
to sort it alphabetically. When I try, I get a message saying that all
merged cells need to be sized identically. I have tried resizing the
cells,
but this does not solve the problem. Any suggestions?
