Thanks for all your help. It was the google toolbar which was causing the
problem and now it is sorted.

Is this new? If so, do a thorough scan for malware.

If this is not new, which version of Excel? 2007 was a lot slower
than 2003, but Service Pack 1 improves things significantly.
