The first to check is outlook. Go to tools/accounts and check if there
are any additional email accounts installed that you dont use anymore.
When you send email via excel, it may get the first available email
account of outlook, but when you send 'normally' through outlook,
outlook could be setup to use by default a specific account that
differs from the first available.

I am using Windows XP (SP2) and Outlook XP. When sending a email attachment
using File = send to= mail recipient , my email message immediately is
returned. However, if I send the spreadsheet as an attachment by first
creating a new email message and then attaching the Excel spreadsheet, the
message goes through fine.
I did notice that when attaching the message using File= send to, the
following was displayed in my email message:
The message is ready to be sent with the following file or link attachments:
Documentation1.xls
