I'm going to guess that it's being opened with some code attached either to
the workbook or that specific sheet. You can find out if that's the case by
using the Visual Basic Editor to try and find the code and removing it. The
code may not show up when you choose Macro | Macros if they are designated as
Private.

Just in that one .xls file, right? Perhaps even just on one sheet in the
book?
