I don't think any of us can answer this question since we don't know how
your workbook is set up or how it works. Each method you're considering has
its pros and cons.

But I would ask this question - I suppose you have sheets for, say, the 2000
season. And you have (I suppose) summary sheets that reference the 2000
season and other seasons. Do the 2000 season stats ever change? I would
think not at this point. So why do you need formulas that reference to 2000
sheets? Can't they (the formulas) be converted to values? And then the
2000 sheets can be moved to their own workbook as backup, can they not?
