Thank you this worked for me even in Excel 2010. I was wondering if this option is unchecked off by default or if it was changed at some point? Thanks for your help

for any of you searching for a solution.. i have found it and thought it may help someone down the road. this is for excel 2007..
go to start button, excel options, click advanced.. now go down to the secion that says "display options for this worksheet", make sure "show outline symbols if an outline is applied" is checked.

I have a data list I wish to subtotal and outline. What is the trick to get
the outline feature to work. All I can get are subtotals below is change in
description. Is there a view setting somewhere to see the 1, 2, 3 etc on
left side of workbook
Thanks

I am sure that the same option exists in xl2007.
Office button|excel options
And look for the Outline symbols option (maybe in a view category????)
