Default How secure are Excel passwords?

I have several Excel 2010 workbooks on which I have personal
information. I have them passworded with Excel's password
function.

Now I'm wondering if that it safe enough?

The short answer is NOT AT ALL SAFE.

The general take on Excel's password protection is it just keep honest people, if they choose to respect the password, from viewing the data.

Safe enough from what?

If it is worksheet protection or workbook protection you are talking about,
then either can be cracked in literally seconds by anyone with a modicum of
ability with Google.

If it is VBA module protection, then this is far more secure, however, there
is a workaround with a hex editor that used to work, but unlikely to be an
issue I would suggest.

If it is File/Open protection via means of a password, then this is pretty
secure, and whilst not absolutely 100% unbreakable, unless you really have
something significant worth stealing, I would think it is unlikely anyone
you come across will have inclination and the means/resources to try and get
past it.
