Default Subtotals

When you enter subtotals on the left hand side you get 1,2,3 to expand the
subtotals or collapse them. How do you get those numbers if they are not
there when you enter subtotals?

If you are doing manual subtotals they will not appear. You can get
something similar by doing the "Group" feature under the Data ribbon.
