Default PivotTable Date Filter External Value

I am familiar w/ how to use the date filter feature within a PivotTable where
I can either filter on a date in the list or enter a date myself in the
dialog box.

However, I am trying to determine if I can do a date filter within a
PivotTable and it base the filter off of a date entered by the user in a
field outside of the PivotTable. I tried to enter a cell reference in the
date filter dialog box, but whatever you enter in the dialog box has to be a
valid date. Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this?
