Default buttons bleeding onto multiple pages

when I open a workbook in excel (2007) that has macro buttons on sheet 2, the macro buttons are visible on sheet 1 when the workbook is initially opened. when i click through the various sheets in the workbook and then return to sheet 1, the buttons from sheet 2 are no longer visible.

i'm not real sure what to call this phenomenon and was wondering if anyone has seen this? any help is appreciated.
