Default GUIDs copied from Access display illegibly in Excel 2003

Hi. I am accessing an MS-SQL database remotely using MS Access as my front
end via ODBC. I see the SQL tables perfectly in every respect but when I
copy and paste the GUIDs that I see in Access into Excel 2003, they appear as
'funny foreign characters'. All other items display fine. Changing the font
makes no difference and a friend to whom I sent the Excel spreadsheet was
able to open it and view the GUIDs unmodified. The versions are Access 2002
SP3 and Excel 2003 SP2.
All suggestions most welcome!
