Gord,
Not to argue with an MVP, but my experience with Excel exactly
matches JT's, and has on many different installations of Excel on many
different PCs. So is it a setting somewhere?

You should be able to enter an = sign then switch to next sheet and select a
cell then hit + key and keep selecting more cells in that sheet until you hit
ENTER, at which time you will return to first sheet.
