Default formula to add numbers gives a date like 10/12/27 instead of sum

Trying to add two numbers in Excel. Instead of the total I get a date in the
cell such as 10/12/27 . I have checked and checked and I am sure that I am
entering the formula to add the cells correctly. There must be somethjing
else embedded in the cell.

What happens if you format the cell as general?
