Default Format date as 'ddd' = "Mon"

Is it possible to format a date as "M" for monday?

I don't want to use a formula (Weekday, etc)

Yes, go to FormatCellCustom, and enter ddd in the box.

A1 contains your date. Use:

=LEFT(TEXT(A1,"dddd"),1)

Sorry, I though you only didn't want to use weekday (instead of any formulae
at all).
