I am a novice with EXCEL 2007 so I don't use it for what it was probably
created for--calculations, computations, etc. Thus, I'm an infrequent user
and don't have any big projects that would normally slow down the functions.
However, it takes anywhere from 15-60 seconds for ANY command to register. I
have the Student Edition of MS Office and when I initially installed it
(about 1 year ago) it was speedy and easy to create simple text and tables.
In the last 6 months, the program does not run correctly and I often get a
(not responding) in the header bar whenever I type or choose a command.
Because of this, I usually revert to creating tables in WORD 2007 which seems
more tedious and time-consuming than using EXCEL. Is there anything I can do
to eliminate the slow response?

I have already tried:
-repair/remove
-uninstall/reinstall
-run diagnostics

Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem?

Have you color filled or bordered cells for more than the active or visible
area of your worksheet?

Have you cleaned your TIF folders and Temp folders in the past year?

Might be a good place to start.

I can't even imagine going a year (or more!) without cleaning those folders.

I clean the TIF folder daily and the TEMP folders at least weekly, without
fail!

There many users out there that don't even know they are caching all that
stuff.

I go into my wife's account about once a month and run cleancache.

I can go for a coffee while it's running.

As this is in the new users area perhaps we should advise the newbys how to
clear their Temporary Internet Files (TIF).

In Internet Explorer select Tools<Internet Options<Browsing
History<Delete<Temporary Internet Files.
It's not as scary as it appears but please be careful with the other
options. Cookies is OK - so is History but watch out not to delete passwords
if your computer remembers them for you.

I worked on a helpdesk once. Coffee! Sometimes you could go for lunch!
