I would simply make locked cells unselectable when protecting the sheet.

How do you think users will wreck the rest of the sheet trying to access
non-selectable cells?

While this may seem overkill, as they cannot access the cells, unless there
is a message to tell them to keep away the users are liable to wreck the rest
of the spreadsheet trying to get into the protected cells.
