One way:

=X^2

where X is a value or cell reference.

Hi Webb,

Do you mean x²?
Hold down the Alt key, type 0178 on the number pad (not the
numbers at the top of your keyboard), then let go of the Alt key.

or you can type x2, then in the formula bar highlight the 2 only
and go to FormatCells and select supertext.
