Default Sum not including writing

Along with numbers, I have to put text into several cells, mainly astericks
and some letters, but I also want to sum these cells. How do i sum the
numbers and exclude the text? Please help!!

Don't do it that way.

Put the indicator in an adjacent column.

You're life (and formulas) will be much easier.
