Default Auto Fill - working as expected?

My understanding of the auto fill was that Excel would search within the
active cell's column for a match, then offer the fill.
If there is a blank row between where I am typing and other entries, the
auto fill does not work.

Is this normal behavior?

I believe you are thinking of Autocomplete.

Only operates on one column at a time and yes....if a blank cell intervenes,
autocomplete will not work.

Normal behaviour.
