Default Can't highlight a single cell. Creates a range when I move curso

I'm working with Excel 2003. All of a sudden I can't highlight a single
cell. When I move the cursor with the mouse or an arrow key, a range is
created. I've shut my computer off and restarted it, but it continues to do
this. How can I get out of this?
