It's a lot easier to calculate the firzt day of the current month as

TODAY()-DAY(TODAY())+1

Using this, a shorter alternative,
=SUMIF(A:A,""&(TODAY()-DAY(TODAY())),B:B)-SUMIF(A:A,""&TODAY(),B:B)
