Default Formulas won't enter into cells in Excel 2000 only as useless data

I have multiple worksheets on a file - where we use formulas with functions
to transfer data from one sheet to another. If I edit the formulas they are
replaced only as raw data and not a formula - and that applies to any formula
placed in the cell - it is not a matter of locking, or protection.

1. clear the cell
2. pull-down
Format Cells... Number General
3. re-enter the formula

To check the procedure, touch CNTRL-~ several time. The cell should toggle
between formula and result.
