Default Finding the highest value from two columns of data

Hi there

I have a large spreadsheet that contains two columns of data. Does anyone
know a formula that will look down each column (A & B) and return the highest
found value into cell C1.

=MAX(A:B)

or

=MAX(A1:B999)
