I need the cells empty so that if a cell previous has data that is too large
for a cell that it overflows. I think the problem is that by entering a
formula this is essentially filling the cell even if nothing is displayed.

Any thoughts?

Have you seen Tools, Options, View, Zero Values? The only problem is real
zeros also show as blank.
