Apparently, the cell I was referencing for the lookup value was formatted as
"text," so Excel "helpfully" auto-formatted the cells containing the referencing functions as "text." Voila! typed formula instead of a result. I went back and made sure that all reference cells were formatted GENERAL. Life is good again...
