Default why is my "compare side by side" command greyed out

I can't activate "compare side by side" the button is greyed out. The
worksheet is not protected and no pass word is needed to open the workbook
where the sheet is located.

I'm using Micosoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003.

Do you have two documents open?
If not, open both the documents that you want to compare.
