Default Formula to sum and list highest to lowest

I have a list of sales people and sales amounts. I need to build a formula
that will give me each persons total sales and list them from highest to
lowest. How would I build a formula with the data below?

Steve $1000
Steve $1500
Peter $800
Peter $500
Jane $1700

You hit Data / Pivot table and Pivot Chart report, drag name into ROW fields,
Amount into DATA area and it does it all for you in seconds. Is there a real
need for a formula?
