I inadvertently turned on the text to specch. How do I
turn this off?

One way:
If you can't see the Text to Speech toobars, View | Toolbars | Text to Speech.
Then, click stop speaking.

I did that and it still will not turn off.

Do you have the Speak on Enter button activated? It's the last button on the
toolbar. Make sure it is Toggled Off--try clicking on it.
