Default Text & Date in the same Cell???

Hi, is it possible to have text & a date in the same cell?? In A! I have
todays date =today(). In D1 I want the statement, "Balance at (today's
date).
I have tried =concatenate("Balance at" , & A1) but it returns a
numerical value for the date bit???
Cheers
Paul.
