Default Function fails to calculate

I enter a text function in excel 2003, correct syntax, but instead of showing
the result the cell continues to show the function. Calculation options don't
affect the result. For example, if cell A2 is "AL TOTAL" and I enter
"=left(A2,2)" in another cell, I should get just "AL". Instead I sometimes
get the function "=left(A2,2)" shwoing indefinitiely. This seems to happen
with large spreadsheets.
