Default Windows ME and Windows XP Function of key F2 is different

When I used EXCELL with Windows ME and wanted to alter a formula in a cell I
pressed F2 and was able to make alterations to the formula. Now, with
Windows XP I Can't. I'd like to be able to make alterations as I could in
Windows ME.
