Default Help Excel97 gives incorrect multiplication response

Excel97 gives incorrect multiplication response when Cell location is used
for eample:
Excel says E4*15.22=873.882 (the value in E4 is 57.42)
However, if I input =57.42*15.22 in a singal cell Excel gives the correct
answer.

How can I get Excel to give correct answers when cell locations are used?

Is the value in E4 the result of a formula? If so, its actual
value may not be 57.42; this might be the rounded displayed
value. With 57.42 in E4, I get 873.932400000000 using E4 and
using 57.42 directly in the formula.
