Default How do I remove a function?

I discovered a function named as "A" with a line over the "A" followed by
several open boxes. I'll call it "junk" below.
I have tried:
1) detect and repair (still have the junk),
2) remove program from the Control Panel, and then re-install Excel (still
have the junk),
3) the FAQs but most dealt with data having junk, although one FAQ led me to
search for custom designed macros or VBA functions (I still have the junk).

I am in no big rush for an answer but I noticed this problem a few weeks ago
when I was creating a spreadsheet analyzing yield to maturity for bonds.
Excel would generate an error report and close repeatedly.

Sensing a disk problem, I ran Win2K control console, ran chkdsk and found
some random and unrepeated disk errors, and sent the machine to my local
computer store. He replaced the mother board. The disks were OK.

Any suggestions would be helpful.
