Default Problem with pasting dates - year mysteriously changes

I'm getting some strange behavior in a formula. It's a very simple formula:

=A2

In cell A2 is a date, formatted correctly as 29-Sep-03. Excel recognizes it
as a date, and will perform correct calculations with it (weeknum, etc.) and
will allow it to be changed to different date formats, which still display
the correct 2003 date.

However, when I reference the cell using the above equation, I get
29-Sep-07. Why does excel add 4 years to my date?

Thank you,
HB
