Excel Function
I want to create a function that will have a letter out of a word in one cell or a letter out of anouther word in a different cell. Example: Cell 1 Dallas D Cell 2 Austin A How do I do this? -- weller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ weller's Profile: http://www.hightechtalks.com/m373 View this thread: http://www.hightechtalks.com/t2295787 |

Excel Function
Not 100% sure this is what you need from your explanation but Say in cell C6 is the word Dallas and in C7 is Austin. In cell D6 type: =C6&" "&LEFT(C6,1) This will result in D6 reading Dallas D. You can then copy and paste to cell D7 which will result in D7 reading Austin A. If all you want is the cell to look for and return the first character in the word in C6 or C7 then in D6 or D7 =LEFT(C6,1) - or - =LEFT(C7,1) Cheers, Steve -- SteveG ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SteveG's Profile: http://www.excelforum.com/member.php...fo&userid=7571 View this thread: http://www.excelforum.com/showthread...hreadid=488720 |

Excel Function
=IF(LEFT(C6,1)="D",C6&" "&LEFT(C6,1),"") This would return the text in column C6 followed by it's first letter only if the first letter is D. So if C6 was Dallas then it would read: Dallas D Otherwise it would keep the cell blank. If all you want is the D then: =IF(LEFT(C6,1)="D","D","") Change the D in parenthesis to whatever letter you want the formula to look for.
