Default need help again please

I need to create a formula to add the dollar values in the cells of one
column based on the date values in a second column being in a certain month
ie October. This is the formula I came up with but it doesn't return the
correct answer:=SUMIF(AU8:AU55,"=10/01/2005=<10/31/2005",AX8:AX55)
Can some one show me where my error is?
thanks
