Default In Excel allow freeze pane in any column plus any row

I need to freeze the second column and the first row. Excel only allows me to
freeze either the first column or the first row. Not both at the same time
and no other than first. Is there a way to freeze any column/row and both
column and row at the same time?

If you select A1 (just to see it)
Then select D5
then window|freeze panes
You'll see rows 1-4 are frozen and columns A:C are frozen.
(everything above and to the left will be frozen)

(It sounds like you may have been selecting a whole row or column.)
