Default Advanced Filter is grayed out

Why can't I use this? Autofilter works fine. I've carefully gone through
help to set up the table and criteria range correctly. Excel 2003 SP1.
Any help will be appreciated.

Is the workbook shared? Advanced Filter is one of the features that
isn't available in a shared workbook.
