Default colors

I am looking for a way to color code a total. For accounting purposes,
if the total is below $0.0 I would like to create a function to show a
negative balance (-0.01) in red.

I am aware that colorsindex ranges can be configured by the position in
the color pallet. I've read about some examples of help using a
'sumbycolor' function. Such as http://www.cpearson.com/excel/colors.htm
but I'm not sure where to start.

Please help.

you can either use Format-cells-custom and select one that gives what you
want, or you can used format-conditional formating
check the discussion in help

Format the cell with Custom Format: [$$-2] # ##0.00_);[Red]([$$-2] #
##0.00)
Right click on the cell, Format Cells...Select tab
NumberCategory:Custom and then copy and past in the above.
