for items with a logical component
(B1=C1)
the relsult is a true or false
the "--" makes it be a numeric 1 or 0 so that it can be used in equations
most formulas will do the conversion for you, but not all.
Many of us just get into the habit of always using it so that we don't have
to remember what formula does what.
