Default hlookup #N/A

I can't figure out why I am getting #N/A for this.

=hlookup(A1, range of the table, 2) returns #N/A, but when I replace the
lookup value with the value in A1 it returns the correct answer.

Please help me. : (

That suggest that A1 has some extraneous spaces, probably at the end.
