Default Excel takes along time to calculate

I am doing a staff statistics table which looks at query table which I have
managed to do successfully with the use of SUMPRODUCT function but the table
takes around 10 minutes to calculate. Some of the statistics is based on 3-4
criteria in the query table. I also need to replicate this table for each
staff member (15). I have read other postings regarding speed issues &
SUMPRODUCT & the recommendations to use a pivot table. I have looked at the
pivot table option but I cannot see that this would work as some of the
columns are SUM & some are COUNT & are based on different criteria.

I hope I have explained myself properly & would appreciate if anyone can
point me in the right direction.

Also can anyone explain why when I try an edit the query it takes 5 minutes
for the query wizard to appear & try to save the query. Refreshing the data
takes only a few seconds. During this time I have noticed in the Task
Manager that the MSQRY32.exe is using alot of my process resources. Using 2.6
Mhz processor with 256MB RAM

TIA
