Default two-up cell display for date

I want to display in a cell, the day of the week (ddd) and the date in mm-dd-yy format. I want to wrap the display so the day of the week is displayed in the upper part of the cell and the mm-dd-yy is displayed below the ddd. I created a custom date format of 'ddd mm-dd-yy'. I then set the cell up to wrap data. However, I can't get the dispaly to wrap. It shows **** as the cell is not wide enough to display my two desired fields without wrapping. I'm using Excel 2007. I would appreciate any advice on how to get a two-up display in the cell.

Can you not add in an extra line for above the date cell and have that for the day. Have the appropriate cell = the date cell and format ddd ???
If you centre across selection and lose your grid lines it will appear to be the same cell
