Default MID / LEN

In cell F 8 I have:-

4-12456

In cell I 8 I have:-

=MID(F8,3,LEN(F8))

The above formula returns 12456 in cell I 8. Why?

I know that MID, €śreturns a specific number of characters from a text
string, starting at the position you specify, and based on the number of
characters you specify€ť.

I know that LEN, €śreturns the number of characters in a text string€ť.

What I dont understand is how the MID feeds into the LEN and / or vice
versa.

TIA for any replies!

The last parameter specifies the number of characters you want MID to return
from text. Here you have given as 5 characters starting from position 3 or
len(F8) which is 7. If the lenght is more than what specified MID() will
return whatever is left..

=MID(F8,3,5)
OR
=MID(F8,3,99)
