Default Preventing hyperlinks and vlookups from breaking

We are planning a re-configuration of our primary Drive and will be moving
most of our folders and subfolders. We commonly use hyperlinks between
workbooks. We are an Excel dependent department nad have thousands of files
within our primary folders and subfolders.

During testing, I find that when the source workbook is moved, the hyperlink
to that workbook no longer works and I get: "Cannot open specified file."

I need to move the folders and subfolders soon and need to know how to
prevent this error from occurring when the users try to use the hyperlinks.

Also, vlookups - I know my vlookups to sheets within a workbook will be
fine. Will the vllokups to other workbooks break also?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!! jane

Just because you have posted here, this won't get you a more pleasing
answer than the ones you have elsewhere.

However, one thing you can do is to use Find & Replace (CTRL-H) to
change the path(s) to suit the new arrangement after you have moved
the folders.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pete,
Sorry about the re-post - I thought I needed to to properly direct my
question to the right experts. Didn't realize you could see across categories
- now I know :)

your suggestion.... each individual would need to do that for each of
their own files within those folders, correct?

Yes, that is correct. It's a swine, isn't it?

As one of the other posters has said, linking to external workbooks
can be very problematic.

Hi Pete....
related but separate...

think levels of file paths - How many levels down the file path before the
link will break?
ie: F:folder\ subfolder\subfolder\subfolder\ file

I'm not sure what you mean.

Suppose you have a file1 with its path1 which points/links to file2
with its path2. If you move file2 so that it now has a different path3
and is no longer at the end of path2, then trying to use file1 will
cause an error, as it will still be pointing/linking to path2/file2.
Even if path3 is a sub-path of path2 (so you have moved file2 up one
or more subfolders), then file2 cannot be found at the end of path2,
so file1 will need to be amended.

Does this answer your question?

Hope this helps.
