Default I do not want the letters and numbers on the border to show

how do I remove the numbers column and the letter row shown on the excel
worksheet borders

Tools Options. Uncheck 'Row & column headers'

Excel 2003
Tools - Options - View
Clear the checkbox against 'Row and column headers' in the Window Options
group.
