I have a list of football results and want to create a formula based league
tabke that updates every time a result is updated. I am sure this can be
done but would like to see the formulae needed to achieve this.

There is not enough info provided. Where is the list of results and where do
you want updat, in a different sheet?
How does the source and target sheets layout is like? Pls provide samples
and expected result.
