"^" is an exponentiation operator. For example, 2^3 means "2 to the
3rd power" -- that is, 2 times itself 3 times: 2*2*2.

Generally, you can learn about operators by putting "operators" in the
search field of Excel Help, then click on "About calculation
operators", then "Type of operators".
