Default Hyperlink "friendly-name" won't preserve links in PDF publishing

I cannot get the hyperlinks to work when I publish to a pdf document unless
the hyperlink is the link itself with no "friendly name".

For example if I use the hyperlink function
=hyperlink(link address,friendly name)

the hyperlink works in Excel but not as a pdf, the only way it works in the
pdf is if I type out the entire link address, which I do not have room for.
