Default Problem entering numbers

I recently transferred to a new PC, bringing with me Excel 97 SR-2 and
a clutch of long-serving worksheets. However, I'm having problems
entering numbers on these old sheets. In a column formatted "Number"
with 0 decimal places, I was accustomed to typing a five-digit mileage
figure. Now, when I press 'Return', the five-digit number is rounded
to a three-digit one (i.e. 20289 turns into 203) I notice that, in
the formula bar, a decimal point has been inserted.

Secondly, in columns formatted "Number" with 2 decimal places, that I
use for sums of money, I need to type numbers after the decimal point.
I can no longer type a whole number of pounds, press 'Return' and have
a decimal point and two zeroes added automatically. Instead, 25
becomes 0.25, not 25.00.

OS on the old machine was XP Home; on the new one it's XP Pro SP2.
Clearly I need to tweak something - what is it, please?

TIA,
